Dr Ziauddin Hospital focuses on the importance of vaccine preventable disease awareness

Influenza virus infections (ILI) substantially contribute to global morbidity and mortality. Every year, globally 3 to 5 million individuals suffer from severe influenza, leading to 250 000 to 500 000 deaths. Influenza occurs throughout the year in Pakistan with seasonal peaks during the winter season from December to February affecting all age groups and gender. ILI is an acute respiratory infection with a measured fever of ≥ 38 C° and cough with onset within the last 10 days. SARI can be defined as an acute respiratory infection with a measured fever of ≥ 38 C° and cough with onset within the last 10 days and requires hospitalization.

At Dr Ziauddin hospital, we see a large influx of patients during flu season and we realize how uncomfortable the common cold can be. Therefore we try to give the best possible patient care. Dr Ziauddin Hospital’s emergency department is resourced with a highly competent and trained casualty and trauma staff, with a 24 hour backup of cardiologists and a coronary unit. The use of modern technology allows prompt diagnosis and hence a higher possibility of precision in treatment within the short critical time period available during an emergency. Two major upgrades were made in the department last year: the recent ECG machines that operate through a laptop and allow virtual data sharing with any medical specialists in an instant, and the defibrillator with a pacer, which allows the medical staff to treat emergency cases in an efficient manner. The poliovirus has proven to be a constant and resilient foe, continuing to appear in some parts of Pakistan. The WHO defined an AFP case as a child <15 years of age with sudden onset of paralysis or muscle weakness due to any cause.

Considering this, Department of Infection Prevention and control of Dr Ziauddin Hospital organizes sessions on Surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases in collaboration with WHO team members. The last session was held on 17th Feb 2021. The session was conducted by WHO officers Dr Liaquat and Dr Ramesh. The session was overall interactive and informative. At Dr Ziauddin Hospital, we try to increase awareness so that people can lead safe and healthy lives.

Maternal and newborn health

Newborns and mothers are still dying in awful numbers many a times from preventable causes.   It is still sad to see that newborns and mothers – including adolescent mothers – are still dying in inadmissibly large numbers – mostly from avoidable or treatable causes, such as infectious diseases and complications during pregnancy or childbirth.  Poorly matched access to reasonable, high-quality health care and services hinders many countries from improving maternal and newborn survival and reducing stillbirths. A significant proportion of maternal and newborn deaths occurs in settings of conflict or  dislodgment . However, in current times, the world has seen noteworthy declines in infant and maternal mortality rates. But women and babies still die in confounding numbers before, during and after childbirth. Many of these deaths can be stopped with better-quality health care. Worldwide, more preventable deaths – an estimated 8 million – occur from poor-quality...

Type 2 diabetes represents 95% of all analyzed diabetes cases. What one needs to know about symptoms or signs? Symptoms of type 1 diabetes include: High levels of sugar in blood and urine Increased hunger and thirst Weight loss Frequent urination Tiredness Nausea and vomiting Mood swings Symptoms of type 2 diabete...

Dr Ziauddin Hospital teaches prevention and control of Hospital acquired Infections through Cleaning, Disinfection & Sterilization

Surgical procedures and invasive medical procedures such as Endoscopy involve contact by a medical device or surgical instrument with a patient’s sterile tissue or mucous membranes. A major risk of all such procedures is the introduction of pathogens that can lead to infection. Failure to properly disinfect or sterilize equipment can increase transmission risk of blood borne infections (e.g., hepatitis B virus) and environmental pathogens (e.g., Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Disinfection and sterilization are essential for ensuring that medical and surgical instruments do not transmit infectious pathogens to patients. Sterilization of all patient-care items is not necessary. Health care facilities identify primarily on the basis of the items' intended use, whether cleaning, disinfection, or sterilization is indicated. Considering this, the Department of Infection Prevention and control, Dr Ziauddin Hospital  organized a session on Prevention and Control of Hospital acquired Infectio...
