A New Era of Awaits ; The Future of Pharmacists

In today’s world most effective, profitable pharmacies have entered a new era, expanding their patient care services and increasing their returns to keep their businesses active and flourishing. During 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has further heightened the need for pharmacists—particularly independent pharmacists who manage smaller, rural stores; looking ahead to the challenge or threat of being left behind.

Modern pharmacy technology is the dynamic force behind these changes, allowing self-governing pharmacies to maintain a competitive edge and stay open in a multifaceted, ever-changing environment. With profit margins lessening, new players entering the market as competitor, and patient expectations constantly sprouting out, diversifying the pharmacy business model is now more vital call than ever before.

Talking on healthcare system- changes in the environment, situation, operational activities and the consumer profile are leading the pharmacy towards an evolution- from a small medicinal set up to a well-being larger center- taking up specialized field of medicines.   Innovative technologies and the prism of the “patient journey” can positively support the healthcare pharmacy system to take on this new role.

At Dr. Ziauddin Group of Hospitals we have taken up the journey on having a digitalized Pharmacy System – where the specialized fields of Medicine are well integrated. We have already started it, to promote best care for our patients. Our digital technology implementations are done through strategic planning & looking towards our pharmacy to define “what’s the path or patient journey as a new consumer” - thus what would be better informed in accurate interest and being proactive in managing the patient’s medicinal needs.

Looking at the future of the “New Pharmacist” - It is expected that the pharmacy will becomes a health reference domain, having dedicated Pharmacist as a Consultant who will direct the patient all through the course of his /her treatment, with greater means of appropriate, justified prescription and assistance, also taking care of regulations and code of ethics - to safeguard privacy and giving the right service; managing the quality care of patients as well as the overall welfare regarding the medicines and vaccination pertinent matters.  This would be a paradigm shift and will require continuous and regular trainings. It is so correct to mention here - “the reinvention of the role of a pharmacist” - not just in terms of products, services and medications, but also in terms of providing best patient medication management. For this, we require demanding and clear communication, and a positive and doable action plan which would further grant a sturdy trustworthiness towards the profession, favoring a long-term and comfortable relationship with all the relevant stakeholders.

Finally, we are looking towards an Intellectual guide who will assist the patient along the pathway - from the time the pain is recognized up to diagnosis, -in  a meanwhile undergoing treatment and waiting for the state to stabilize. The designated Consultant Pharmacist would also be a coach in the daily effort for maintaining the healthy state of a patient.
